Footprints in the sand...

This series is of beach sand with footprints made by man and by the sea...
 It serves to remind us that every 'contact leaves a trace'...
It is therefore wise to consider our ways as we walk through the sandy beaches that are the lives of others... E:thos

I'd like to share a poem with you that has been a comfort to me in difficult times and a beautiful reminder of the love God has for me...I hope you are blessed and encouraged by it.

Footprints in the sand... A poem by Mary Stevenson

Last night I had a dream.
 I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord.
 Across the sky flashed scenes from my life.
 For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand:
one belonged to me, the other to the Lord.

After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
 I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
 I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
 especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
 there was only one set of footprints.

This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.
 “Lord, you said once I decided to follow you, You’d walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
 there was only one set of footprints.
 I don’t understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me.”

The Lord replied,
 “My son, my precious child, I love you and I would never leave you.
During your times of suffering, when you could see only one set of footprints,
 it was then that I carried you.”

Rue's Friday Fragments @ Half Past Kissing Time...

I have just discovered this really great posting group hosted by the lovely Mrs 4444 at Half Past Kissing Time called Friday Fragments. Essentially it is an opportunity to share tid-bits, rants and observations that I have made in the week. Not to mention that odd picture I have taken that doesn't fit in anywhere, and put them all together in one post on Friday (yes I know I am doing this on Saturday but like I said I just came across it!) So here goes...

Issue No. 1 -Rue's Top 10 Friday Fragments...

10. Random Image:
What? I thought the logs were interesting! :-)
9. Men who are beaten by their wives!
I read this rant on a blog I follow called 3 Men on a Boat where it was identified that men in Zimbabwe were increasingly becoming the victim of domestic violence which honestly surprised me! Being a woman who is acutely aware that the reverse happens in a far greater magnitude it is almost forgiveable if I cheered on these 'husband beaters'. I am however of the school of thought that one ought not to fight fire with fire and therefore I cannot condone violence regardless of the victim, all abuse is wrong and should be exposed as such!

8.Doctors out of hours service...or not! as the case may be...
I was as sick as a dog particularly on Thursday night and as one does I called my doctors out of hours service. Now I am not one to make a fuss and if I didn't think i could be dying or worse living with extreme pain! I wouldn't bother anyone, so me calling them was a big deal! Well as it happens I didn't bother them at all! I call at midnight and didn't get a call back until 1am ironically just as I was about to fall asleep only to be told to go to sleep! and call the doctor in the morning!!!!!!! Arrrgghhh to say the least, so -10/10 for service!

7.Vintage Clothing a must!
My friend Pam has got me hooked on Vintage clothing and I recently got this fabulous T-shirt with a plump but very hot lady on it indulging on all her favourite things from food to spa like treatments! I thought yes, this was made for me so I picked it up and went to the till and you wouldn't believe it was discounted from £14 to £3! Yaaaaay!!!!! Go Vintage!!!! Lol!

6. Nasty Neighbours!
When I moved into my flat I was warned by my landlord that the people across the street had displayed racist behaviour and attitudes to a young Indian couple who had lived here before me. I am one tough cooking who is clued up on my rights and not easily rattled so i figured i could take them if push came to shove. I have been here over a month and they have been pleasant enough to me so I assumed that it was just an issue between neighbours. Well I had an Indian girlfriend come over for lunch this week and I popped to the shop just before she arrived so she had to wait for 5 minutes. In that short time the neighbours had come out and started attacking my friend! What the heck is that about!?!?! Needless to say as I arrived they dispersed and smiled at me!!!!! I could't believe it when she told me...not happy at all! How small minded is that!?!?! unbelievable!!!! I think there should be a prision term for people who insist on being ignorant in countries like the UK that are so multicutlutal and most informed of all societies around the world.

5. Anniversary of 911
Image courtesy of the internet
You would need to be living under a rock to not have heard of the preacher int he States threatening to burn the Koran today if a Muslim prayer room / mosque is built near ground zero. This story disturbed me, not because he is threatening to do it and not because of the location of the mosque but because neither of these are the real issue, particularly this day. Today should be about us as a world taking stock on what causes acts like that, what we have so much hate in the world and what can be done to make a genuine change not just stop a mosque being built. We need to be spreading the gospel of truth and light that Jesus is and giving people an opportunity to turn from hate and turn to God. Not squabbling over real estate which wont change anything but may cause those who need little reason to take their own lives to spite others to action. As a Christian I am saddened by this preachers approach because he ill represents my faith and make Christians seem as hateful as the people who caused this atrocious act.

4. Baby fever!
My sister has just had her first baby! A boy!!!! I am soooo excited about it! and am heading off to meet my nephew for the first time!!! Yaaay!!!!! Pictures to follow....
'Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.' (Psalms 127:3-5 ESV)

3. Jesus want to be your friend on Facebook
Image courtesy of the internet
I saw this image above on Facebook and was in two minds about what I thought of it. On the one hand that picture is not actually Jesus! But I honestly feel that in today's global community online, evangelism has to be more flexible and interactive. Churches do need to become technologically and social networking friendly to reach a whole generation whose lives are based online in social media networks. Its not a 'taking the mic' image and the words are convicting so I give it my rubber stamp / green light and yes I accepted Him! :-)

2. Facebook parenting!
You may be as shocked as I was when I saw a friend updating her status on Facebook with a rant about her daughters behaviour. You may think no Rue, we are not shocked by that, well you will be when I say that said friend went on to write on her daughter wall that she was grounded! No computer, no friends no nothing! Then her daughter came online and responded to this post by telling her mother where to go! and she went on to be online for 2hrs after that!!!!! Whatever happened to the rod of correction and actually confiscating the computers/phone whatever and actually meaning what you say and not just threatening your child? Not to mention showing the world that you have no control over said child! I give up!

1. Woman watching her rape on a mobile phone!
You wont believe this but a BBC news report I watched this week showed a woman who was given spiked drinks by people she knows then they proceeded to rape her, record it on a mobile phone and when she came round from the drugs showed her the clip!!!!!! Oh my days! Who does that!!!!!!! Seriously!!!!! I was so shocked and disgusted I couldn't believe that this is the world we are living in! Worse yet they tried to get her to believe she had some how consented or been a party to this  to the point she almost felt she couldn't report these men to the police! WOMEN RAPE AND ABUSE OF ANY KIND IS NEVER YOUR FAULT!!!! DON'T LET ANYONE MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE IT IS BECAUSE IT IS NOT!

That's it, my top 10 for this week! All that is left to say is please please vote for Passion in the Moments for the people's choice awards at coolphotoblogs. All you have to do is follow the link below:

What is fashion?

I must admit that I am only posting on this topic because I saw my mate wearing the T-shirt and I had to take a picture of it! So there is no agenda and possibly little depth to what I have to say on the subject of fashion, not. Now this is not because I don't have impeccable taste and style (big grin here!) but because I don't like what the fashion industry stands for to be perfectly honest. The stick thin models, the super expensive designer lines made for pennies in poor third world countries, possibly by children and so on...So no, I am not championing a debate on the subject... I do however want to hear what you think fashion is????
This is me loving my style...yes its starts with passion and a sense of fun!

I'll go first! I say fashion is a personal self-expression of one's character, where you are in your life at that time and your sense of creativity, passion and sense of fun! All words that don't describe clothes at all really but then does fashion start on the rack or in the heart????

The best definition of fashion I have ever come across is; Fashion is a state of mind...a spirit, an extension of one's self. Fashion talks, it can be an understated whisper, a high-energy scream or an all knowing wink and a smile. Most of all fashion is about being comfortable with yourself, translating self-esteem into a personal style' Cynthia Durcanin( Editor of Elle Magazine.) I completely agree with Cynthia and am genuinely surprised that she is of this opinion yet works in the world of fashion. In light of this fact, my caveat is thus; in addition to the above I believe that fashion has to be self influenced FIRST before the latest 'whatever is going' gets to throw its 'two penny's worth' on what you 'should and shouldn't' when it comes to your personal style and fashion sense .

Tower Bridge

This is a collection of images of the famous Tower Bridge, London, England.

Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge over the River Thames.
 It is close to the Tower of London, which gives it its name.

I created this aged image of the bridge to give a feel for its age.

The rule of the second chance...

Whenever we see the break of dawn we are assured of a new day, a second chance if you will, not to erase the mistakes of yesterday or change it in any way but to right some of the wrongs and get us back on track. Sunrise signifies a new opportunity to make different choices that will alter our paths, if we choose well, for the good. A second chance works in a similar way. It does not discount the failures and successes of days gone by but gives us a new opportunity to revisit an element of our past in hopes that we will make better choices the second time around.

There is a school of thought that diligence in preparation, attention to detail and devotion in relationships are not as important as they used to be. We live in times where the media encourages us to be self-indulged and absorbed. If we like it, we should 'just do it'. If we fail its because of our childhood so we don't have to take responsibility we can blame our parents. If we don't do well in education we can blame our teachers and the government will make exams easier so we don't really have to try. If we fail to meet our targets at work, we get paid anyway and in performance reviews managers are expected to be sensitive to under achievers and the lost goes on! We live in a time when more and more people find themselves looking for a second chance because society permits failure as common place in all aspects of life. So much so that it is sugar coated and sold as 'non-viable efforts'. People who fit into this category go through half their lives before they realise they have been fed a lie and they try to find a way to change their life and make more positive choices...second chances at life...

What many people do not appreciate is that an opportunity once gone, is gone forever...you cant be 16 again or take back spoken words or regain lost time. A second chance is often viewed as a means for going back over what is done and 'un-spilling spilt milk' if you like. This is particularly so in relationships between people, whether it be parent and child, siblings, relatives, friends, or lovers. There is a tendency in these relationships to speak too rashly to a point where familiarity breads contempt, to act thoughtlessly where the impact on other people is not considered and the result is always a breakdown in the relationship. In these situations of betrayal, hurt and sometimes heartbreak, ties can be severed and damage, sometimes irreversible damage results. In times like these, when we realise out failings, we wish for, even pray for a second chance...

The reality is that all of these actions, inactions, failures, mistakes, words all have an effect on those who commit them and those at the receiving end. No experience in life leaves us unscathed...On way or another there is an impact, we are somehow altered, even slightly but what we hear and experience and the result is that put in the same circumstances / relationship again, we will be different people and therefore the second chance if you like is not the same opportunity that was once lost. The changes in other people and in us have such an impact upon is that if we fail to recognise these changes and attempt to navigate the second opportunity based on the 'old rules' if you like, we may find ourselves back at the point of failure simply because the fail to realise that second chances are new opportunities not re-runs of the opportunities lost...

When I think of the things in my life I would like a second chance at, those I had a second chance at and ruined and those I will never have the opportunity to revisit in my lifetime, I realise the the first rule of the second chance is that it is not a guarantee nor is it promised to anyone and it is never a second chance at the first opportunity but a whole different opportunity with a different set of circumstances altogether. So whenever we sabotage ourselves through our pride, ignorance or sheer laziness and procrastination or our words... we need to understand that the thing with second chances is that you don't get one...

A love affair with books...

I love books and I really love to read! One can get lost in a good book and find one’s self and the meaning of life, re-discover who they are and find the dreams they had forgotten. Books can give you knowledge and open you up to a whole different world...

 The greatest tragedy today is that the world is raising children without books! Too many children spend their childhood on computers, in front of TV’s, on electronic games but not enough time in books!  There are audio books and now electronic books available on the market which may go some way towards bringing books ‘back into fashion’. But there is no substitute for the smell of old books, the sound of  the leaves as the rustle and the ability to create dog ears and employ the use of a book-marker.
It is somewhat ironic that the girl who created this amazing book – dress was encouraged to take and literally destroy books in order to create  by her teacher at college.

Whether or not we agree with the principle of destroying books for any reason, this young lady has done an amazing job at creating this really good work of art.The worth of a book is to be measured by what you can carry away from it.  ~James Bryce

A good book should leave you... slightly exhausted at the end.  You live several lives while reading it.  ~William Styron, interview, Writers at Work, 1958
Many people, other than the authors, contribute to the making of a book, from the first person who had the bright idea of alphabetic writing through the inventor of movable type to the lumberjacks who felled the trees that were pulped for its printing.  It is not customary to acknowledge the trees themselves, though their commitment is total.  ~Forsyth and Rada,Machine Learning
You know you've read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend.  ~Paul Sweeney

Books can be dangerous.  The best ones should be labeled "This could change your life."  ~Helen Exley

A book is the only place in which you can examine a fragile thought without breaking it, or explore an explosive idea without fear it will go off in your face.  It is one of the few havens remaining where a man's mind can get both provocation and privacy.  ~Edward P. Morgan

There is a wonder in reading Braille that the sighted will never know:  to touch words and have them touch you back.  ~Jim Fiebig

Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested.  ~Francis Bacon
The art of reading is in great part that of acquiring a better understanding of life from one's encounter with it in a book.  ~André Maurois

The best of a book is not the thought which it contains, but the thought which it suggests; just as the charm of music dwells not in the tones but in the echoes of our hearts.  ~Oliver Wendell Holmes

SK Expressing herself !

There is nothing more pleasurable than seeing young people, with wide eyes and open hearts, dreaming big, expressing them selves resonantly  and making no apology for their free-thinking expressive and creative mindsets and attitudes to life! It was therefore with great pleasure that I attended the Thames Valley Collage end of year Art Exhibition. I was invited by one such young person, a truly inspirational 'up and coming' artist in her own right and a dear friend. She exhibited a full spread of artistic delights which I captured and now share with you here, enjoy!

A woman by SK

An art/craft/poetry/prose project inspired by The Diary of Ann Frank by SK

An interesting artistic presentation contrasting the hardness of Shylock, (a character from Shakespeare's 'Merchant of Venice'  with his softer side represented by the flowers. By SK

A really imaginative and interesting piece with a backdrop of words from Shylock's speech in a scene from the play where he shows his softer side.

This piece is a combination of dance moves from a routine SK taught a group of children at the
Reading Youth Theatre which was incorporated into a  play this week. The theme is;
  'Life, Death, Heaven & Hell' by SK
She did not specify which image represented each one, it was for the individual to interpret it in their own way after reading the words written on each body. The words talk of how one can not make it to heaven without Christ, a powerful evangelism and artistic piece.

SK is really coming into her own, finding her voice and it shows! She is a fairly new Christian who got saved through and evangelistic event that my Church carried out last September at her collage and she has held strong and faithful to God ever since. Her salvation in Christ has really had a complete impact on her life and strongly influences her art which gives a refreshing way to view the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Her work poses questions and is thought provoking without forcing a answer on the viewer which is nice as it therefore allows one a lot of artistic room to see for oneself rather than being told what to think which I like. She thinks out of the box simply because she has never been in proverbial 'box' which shows in her work and the subjects she chooses. Her Ann Frank's diary inspired project was done to contrast the Forest of Dean with Ann Frank's life, not an easy assignment which was self chosen. She contrasted the two well which you can see as you look through the book she made out of her old Dutch passport, a nationality she shares with Ann Frank and bringing a personal touch to her work.

Overall I think that she has amazing talent and a really great outlook on life and art. She is bold and wears her heart in her art for all to see; with each piece you almost feel like you get a peek through the window to her soul. She does somehow seem to be holding herself back a little, this may be due more to her not quite deciding what form of art she wants to pursue specifically or maybe a little lacking in confidence? At the tender age of 17 she has achieved much already and as far as I can see has a bright future ahead of her!

Environmental terrorism

                                                             Image courtesy of the BP website
My Dear Fellow,

It was with great joy that I received your letter on the fifteenth day of June in the year of our Lord two thousand and ten.
As one of my earliest tutors in the University of Life, I eagerly look for and willingly accept all opportunities to receive your auspices and glean from your wisdom on all matters. I was therefore pleased to see that my public spouts on issues pertaining to quasi political and environmental issues occurring on the world stage have caught your attention.
In reading your remarks I could not help but notice that there was some err in the delivery of what prima facie appeared to be a sound argument. Peradventure this correspondence may enlighten you and perhaps today (on this occasion) the student becomes the teacher.
I quote the statement that has aroused such interest and caused you to seek to instruct me in this matter as follows;
“Can one really compare the BP oil spill to the September 11th TERRORIST attack?????? Well Obama did!!!!!! Come on!!!!!! Talk about deflecting your failures to bring the "Change" you promised in your election campaign by saying that "British Petroleum" have caused what can be compared to a full on terrorist attack!!!! Someone sack him!!!!!!!!!!!!”
 The above statement was inspired by the new reporting of the day that quotes President Obama as saying that, “BP oil spill impact 'echoes' 9/11” in relation to its impact on the people of America.
There are three points that I would like to bring to your attention as I address your remarks as follows;

1.   What is a terrorist?
Terrorism is the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion;
Terror can be defined as; A state of intense fear; One that inspires fear; A frightening aspect;
Terrorism can therefore be defined as ‘violent or destructive acts (such as bombing) committed by groups in order to intimidate a population or government into granting their demands’.

As it is clear from the definitions above, terrorism is a deliberate act, with a specific purpose to cause / inspire fear and terror in the hearts of its victims. I believe it is fair to say that an Environmental disaster (an accident no less) albeit, from carelessness of failings on any one party, cannot be compared, discussed or even contemplated in the same arena as an act of terrorism.

2.   What was the impact did 9 11 actually have on the people of America?
On September 11th 2001, a terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre left the following ‘IMPACT’ on the minds and in the hearts of the people of America;

·        2,819 people were murdered by those terrorists. Of  these;
o   23 were New York police department officers attending the scene
o   343 firefighters trying to put the fires that ensued out and the fires burned for 99 days after the attack before they were successfully put out
o   115 countries lost their national in this disaster and;
o   22 US soldiers died in Operation Enduring Freedom
·        36 000 Units of blood were donated to the New York Blood Centre
·        1 609 people lost a spouse in the attack, most of them the bread winners of the family
·        20% of Americans knew someone personally who was in one way or another directly or indirectly were affected, hurt or killed in these attacks.
·        422 000 New Yorkers suffered from post traumatic stress and;
·         1.4 million Americans changed their air tickets to train tickets in the period that followed.

America was on its knees with a wide spread of panic and fear gripped the nation, gun sales and racist attacks on Muslims grew daily and there was a sense that no one was safe from there on in. The impact of that day still resonates on many Americans today. Not one citizen of the country was left unscathed but this outrageously audacious act of terrorism.

3.   The financial element

I appreciate that your remarks were focused on and addressed a financial comparison to the disaster so I will address that now. Yes as you quite rightly state, BP did announce pure profits of $25 billion dollars in 2008 and yes they announced $14 billion dollars in 2009 and therefore I appreciate that one would hope they would invest some of this in their health and safety strategies. Being a Health and Safety Law professional I am acutely aware of their track record and failures when it comes to Safety and the Environment and this letter in no way excuses BP’s actions and inactions in this matter.
It is fair to say that BP has made a fortune from oil due to the world’s addiction and constant increasing demands for this fuel. BP can be rightly accused of being a big capitalist corporation that is in the business of making profit and will turn a blind eye to safety breaches to achieve its ultimate goal. Is this wrong? Of course it is wrong but that is not the question. The real question is; were BP’s activities such that, its failing would give rise to the feeling of fear devoid of safety and complete panic that a terrorist attack would give rise to in the America population?

 Consider the financial comparison between the two events as a final indicator of how they and their effects are polar opposites and not, as President Obama would like us to believe them to be on par.

The Financial Implications of the 9 11 terrorist attack In 2001 post the bombing of the World Trade Centre cost New York business and International companies based there the following;

·        146 100 jobs were lost post 9 11
·        An economic loss of $105 billion dollars occurred in October 2001 alone as a direct result of this event
·        Clean up costs were set to be in the region of $600 million
·        $ 970 million was spent by the FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency)
·        $40.2 billion dollars of insurance pay outs resulted

The current estimates for the cleanup and loss as a result of the Gulf of Mexico Oil spill is as follows;

·        Estimated total costs of containment and clean-up to be approximately $3-6 billion of which BP has already parted with $ 1.43 billion so far and they have assumed responsibility as one would expect.
·         BP has also committed to paying damages to those affected by the spill, which is currently estimated, will amount to an additional $14 billion ( The financial loss, according to the interviews aired on all news channels so far is the main concern for local businesses.)

In summation;  this letter, does not seek to address BP’s guilt or in any way absolve it from said guilt;  but to show how President Obama’s statement of comparison of BP’s actions to that of the aftermath of one of the world’s worst and certainly America’s worst terrorist attack  was fallacious at best. It is no more permissible to compare BP’s failures to the 9 11 attack as it would be for one to compare the actions of bankers that lead to the World Economic Crisis followed by recessions across the globe as outright acts of terrorism, though the latter has caused more loss financially, emotionally and indeed in terms of loss of life globally, than BP could ever aspire to in any magnitude from an oil spill.

 Erroneous proclamations of this nature are dangerous and indeed inflammatory and defaming in the worst possible way. Far worse than that; they are careless and completely disregarding of the countless American and other lives lost, effected and affected by the country’s worst terrorist attack in history. An attack which is far from laid to rest in the past but is still very much relevant in the American psyche today.

 Your learned friend,

Rudo Nyangulu LLB (Hons), NEBOSH Grd, IOSH Mb
